In the tradition of Dickens, who wrote books that enjoyed massive success in their time, The Angel's Game is a guaranteed page turner with many twists and turns of plot, a touch of horror, and much suspense. The story takes us back to the gothic universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the Sempere and Son bookshop, and the winding streets of Barcelona's old quarter, in a masterful tale about the magic of books and the darkest corners of the human soul. The book is an examination of the power of books to change our lives in ways we don't even realize.--Milane Christiansen, The Book Works (Del Mar, CA)

Connie Goodwin should be writing her Ph.D. dissertation. Instead, her mother has asked her to handle the sale of Connie's grandmother's abandoned home near Salem, Massachusetts. While cleaning up the years of dust and cobwebs, Connie makes discoveries that lead her back to the world of the Salem witch trials. Howe does a superb job at combining modern day language with the 17th century voices, pulling you even deeper into a story of mystery and witches. Marvelous and terrifying at the same time. I loved it!--Annie Philbrick, Bank Square Books (Mystic, CT)

John Pipkin's WOODSBURNER is an audacious, wondrous surprise-- audacious for putting someone like Henry David Thoreau and a true event from his life (a great fire) in a novel. It is a luminous story, in which Thoreau, a handful of insightfully drawn characters, and an America they all embody are cast in vivid relief. It is also a beautiful story of this country in its formative stages--how community, property, prosperity are being parsed out. Its language is one with the times. It has one of our bookseller ancestors down pat, for sure. Another character embraces the wonders of the woods - and womanhood - in ways even Thoreau never will equal. The fire itself is a real character, illuminating as it destroys. 165 years later, WOODSBURNER feels like a story from yesterday.--Rick Simonson, The Elliott Bay Book Company (Seattle, WA)

In this book, which is full of observations and maps, we see the world through the eyes of a Cheerio-obsessed twelve-year-old with the wisdom of an old soul. It is funny, tender, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and full of insight. On every page there was something that I wanted to read aloud to anyone who would listen.--Jake Hallman, A Great Good Place for Books (Oakland, CA)

This beautifully realized story tells of a family's quest for meaning in lives gone awry. Told alternately from the perspective of each character, the narrative unravels a lifetime of buried feelings, regrets, and lost desires. McLaren deftly chronicles this family's downward spiral and ultimate redemption through forgiveness. In a world of what if's, On the Divinity of Second Chances gives the reader a remarkable look at the healing power of second chances.--Brianne Kuhle, Lindon Bookstore (Enumclaw, WA)

Reading Christopher Beha???s book is like having a friendly, hip professor give you a syllabus with extended notes in the margins. It???s anecdotal and lit crit at the same time, and a fine introduction to some of the best books ever written. Beha decided to read the Harvard Classics in its entirety in one year, and write about not just what he absorbs from the books, but how reading these classics impacts his life. He successfully approaches the topic of reading to understand one???s place in the world, and he also talks about the necessity of reading with a foot in the past and the present. A must read for anyone fascinated about how reading transforms us!--Michele Filgate, RiverRun Bookstore (Portsmouth, NH)

Having read about Ruth Reichl's eccentric and long-suffering mother in Tender at the Bone, I wasn't sure I was ready to revisit this unusual (or not so) family. Ms. Reichl does a wonderful job of showing us the person at the heart of Miriam Reichl, a woman who struggled against the constraints of 1950's American culture, and who encouraged her daughter to enter a world which, in her own generation, Miriam so desperately wanted to belong but could not access. Most of this book is based on letters and diaries that Ruth found after her mother's death. How bittersweet that some of the most intimate insights about our loved ones take place after the grave separates us.--Lisa Stefanacci, The Book Works (Del Mar, CA)

Whether you are a mystery lover or not, you are going to fall hard for Flavia de Luce, the newest sleuth on the block. Not many books make me laugh out loud, but The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is wickedly clever and I had a great time reading it. I want to be friends with Flavia - I wonder if she needs an assistant on her next case?--Jennifer Meador , Lemuria Bookstore (Jackson, MS)
